ALBAWABA - Former president and nationalist politician Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has officially submitted his bid for the upcoming snap elections on June 28.

Following the tragic helicopter crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian along with other Iranian officials, a date has been set for the new presidential elections after talks held by a committee presided over by interim president Mohammad Mokhber.

A video posted by Ahmadinejad's Telegram account shows him telling a group of his supporters earlier in the day that he will run for office. His supporters in the parliament showed imminent support for his candidacy, claiming that he is "one of the most popular political figures in the country" and welcomed his potential candidacy.

Parliament member, and representative of Tabriz in the parliament, said, "If Mahmoud Ahmadinejad runs for president, he will win". Ahmadinejad was disqualified from running in the 2017 and 2021 presidential elections by the Guardian Council.

"Ahmadinejad must be assured that the Guardian Council will approve him for candidacy because if he signs up and is disqualified, it will have dire consequences," Alireza Beigi added.

Beigi warned of the consequences of the possibility of barring Ahmadinejad disqualification without going into further detail. After he was denied to run in the 2017 elections, Ahmadinejad voiced his criticism of the system, and openly criticized Khamenei.

Ahmadinejad was well-known for nuclearizing Iran and holding rigid political beliefs. In addition, he served as Tehran's mayor from 2003 to 2005, undoing many of the changes implemented by his predecessors. He was the principal political figurehead of the Alliance of Builders of Islamic Iran, a confederation of conservative political organizations in the nation.
