Former Iranian president, Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said Friday at Tehran university's central campus that the US "dreams" on Iran never came true.
Speaking in front of thousands of worshipers, Rafsanjani referred to the last month student riots in Tehran and a few other major Iranian cities, condemning the hasty support of various top US officials for them.
"The White House had dreamt sweet dreams, quite the opposite of which met reality here in Iran," said the current head of Iran's Expediency Council.
Referring to George W. Bush's Thursday comments during a press conference, the Iranian official said, "Mr. Bush has said that the Americans can solve their problems with Iran through peaceful methods, but regardless of such comments, we would keep paving our own path, stressing on our detente policy." "Our nation is neither an opportunist one, nor the kind to resort to the use of the nuclear power for military purposes, and making other types of weapons of mass destruction."
Elsewhere in his sermon, Rafsanjani noted the United States has resorted to "the quite malicious policy of globalizing and unipolarizing" of the world "in order to solve its internal problems."
Ayatollah Rafsanjani added, "those problems include security and economic conflicts with which the United States has been entangled, and the US policy makers assumed by creating an intelligence atmosphere of excitement, horror, and terror around the globe they could revive the era of colonialism and black mailing, thus solving their own economic problems."
The former president said that all the current "US colonialist moves" can be interpreted based on that pattern, adding, "yet, such policies cannot be going on for a very long period, and are also hazardous for the Americans, as well, the signs of whose defeat are observed both inside and outside their country."
"The initial signs of defeat of such policies can already be observed in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Palestine, and even England and the United States."
In Iraq, Rafsanjani said, the Ba'thist regime of Saddam has been toppled and the Iraqi army has been dissolved, "but today, over three months after those events, and amid the presence of 150 thousand US military forces in Iraq, plus hundreds of most advanced fighter planes, and forces from several other countries that support the us policies and forces, they have been urged to confess that they are faced with acute security problems."
The Ayatollah said, "today the US citizens have the nightmare of having got entangled in another Vietnam." "Life for the Iraqi people, too, is going through an era of suspension in the middle of nowhere today, and for the foreseeable future, and the Americans have been pushing for the military presence of other nations in Iraq."
