India will never back the sanctions imposed on Iraq, Minister of External Affairs Jaswant Singh told journalists in Delhi, quoted by Novosty news agency.

It is India's firm belief that these sanctions are ineffective and harmful for the Iraqi people, he added.

According to the minister, introduction of the so-called no-fly zones was in no way sanctioned by United Nations Security Council's resolutions.

"We have always objected to these sanctions, although we do think Iraq must fulfill the appropriate resolutions of the UN Security Council," stressed Singh.

The UK, backed by the US, has suggested that UN sanctions on Iraq be lifted, but a ban on weapons imports is to remain in place.

Iraq’s revenues from oil sales would be under UN supervision, according to the plan, which has so far been held up by Iraq, China, Russia and France – Albawaba.com
