Saudi Arabia will open its first movie theater in Riyadh during the upcoming holiday of Eid El Fitr. The theater will screen only animated films to an audience of women and children only.

According to Al Hayyat, the momentous occasion was initiated by the municipality of Riyadh and a public Saudi company.

The theater, which is expected to seat 1,400, will be placed inside one of Riyadh’s major hotels, and will screen three films.

More than 50,000 spectators are expected during the three-day screenings.

One Saudi source said that other cities in Saudi Arabia are likely to have similar theaters which will allow the entrance of men as well.

Presently, Saudi Arabia has no official movie theaters. Instead, some films are screen publicly in cafes via satellite channels.
