Firemen were battling Sunday to bring under control a forest fire whipped up by high winds in the Marmaris region of western Turkey, Anatolia news agency reported.

The fire, which began Thursday by a break in electric cables crossing the forest, has already reduced 1,500 hectares of pines to ash. According to officials, the fires were not immediately threatening any villages or sites popular with tourists in the summer season.

Firemen were being backed up by 17 fire-fighting planes and helicopters equipped with water tanks as well as dozens of military from a close naval base. (Albawaba.com)
