ALBAWABA - Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has urged the European Union to impose sanctions on Israel in response to increasing Middle East tensions.

Finland's Yle news agency, she made remarks on Monday after attending the EU foreign ministers' conference in Luxembourg, where they discussed current developments in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Valtonen noted that negotiations for placing penalties on Israel are now underway inside the EU and that such a move would require support from all member states.

"Opinions are divided here, but the message is already quite strong that we must take clear action against Israel. Especially if the escalation continues from here and does not end," Valtonen stated.

The minister encouraged the EU to consider imposing more sanctions on Israel, emphasizing the prospect of expanding the sanctions already imposed on Israeli settlers who stole Palestinian properties earlier this year to include the country's senior leaders.
