The protests in Lebanon that began in October 2019 and have expanded since the blast in the capital, Beirut, on 4 August, started, to some extent, online. The government, unable to collect enough tax revenue to support the basic functions of the state, opted to attempt to collect more revenue through a tax on internet calls, such as calls through WhatsApp.   Online activism has begun to take a central position in Lebanon’s fight against a corrupt and incompetent government.
