The month of May at AUB will be vibrant with activity. The events taking place on campus will include the much-awaited AUB Outdoors and Folkdance Festival. AUB would also like to invite its alumni to register their children in its upcoming summer program.
On Sunday, May 2 and Monday May 3, the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business SRC, along with BankMed, will be holding the MENA Student Case Competition. Students from six universities from the MENA region will be participating in this competition, competing at analytical problem-solving concerning problems posed by the case study on the Lebanese company SILKOR. The focus of the case study will be on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), in which the main object of a company is to do business while embracing responsibility for its effects on the environment and community. At the end of the competition, students will plant a total of ten trees in AUB as a contribution to environmental awareness. The winning team will be rewarded with a tool that will keep them connected to the business world.
The following day, on Tuesday May 4, and Wednesday May 5, the Center of Civic Engagement and Community Service (CCECS) will be holding the 2010 AUB Volunteering Fair: For a Better Community from 10:00 am till 4:00 pm in front of West Hall. This annual event aims at connecting non-governmental organizations and AUB centers and groups involved in community work with AUB students, faculty and staff. Stands will be set up around West Hall, through which NGOs will spread their message and display their projects related to civic engagement and community service and development. Bathish Auditorium will be reserved for presentations; each participating NGO will be allocated a time slot to present their organization, followed by a question-and-answer session.
Spanning the first two weeks of May, AUB will be holding its annual Admissions Fair for high school students in their junior year. Students from schools all over Lebanon are invited to come to AUB to learn about the admissions process. The program will provide prospective students with the necessary information and services to help them make informative decisions about their university education. The high school students will also be taken on a tour around the campus by AUB students, who will show them the richness and uniqueness of the AUB campus.
On May 19 and 20, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture will be holding the Ninth FEA Student Conference in Bechtel Engineering Building and Dar Al-Handasah Architecture Building. This annual conference provides a forum in which students can present their projects, research, and designs, open all day for public viewing. The program will feature five tracks of engineering and architecture and will include presentations and technical sessions. An exhibition will highlight the work of FEA students, including final year projects. Awards will be granted for outstanding contributions. The conference accepts paper submissions from students from other universities in Lebanon.
At the end of May, the AUB campus will morph into a brightly-colored carnival and circus during the annual Outdoors activities, to be held on Saturday, May 22, and Sunday, May 23. Student clubs participating with stands and hosting games in this year’s Outdoors will include, the Red Cross Club, the Biology Student Society, the Syrian Club, and the Human Rights and Peace Club. All are invited to come join the carnival.
As for the Folkdance Festival, it will take place on May 30 from 6 to 8 pm. Participants from 14 schools from all over Lebanon will gather on the Green Oval, with each school sporting its own costume design. The dancers will join together in six general formations, followed by unique exhibition dances from each school.
Finally, the Continuing Education Center, along with the Office of Alumni Relations and WAAUB, is hosting the Summer Program for AUB Alumni Children, to be held on campus from July 5 to July 30. Registration is ongoing. The Summer Program will allow alumni children to sample the AUB learning experience by participating in classes in Arabic language, history, culture, and more. It will also include daily and weekly excursions to the Cedars, Baalbek, Jbeil, and Beiteddine, among others. The registration will cover lodging in AUB dormitories, meals, health insurance, classwork, site visits, field trips, social activities, and transportation. The program provides alumni children with a once-in-a-lifetime experience at AUB and in Lebanon.
