The European Parliament voted on Thursday in favour of initiating a temporary freeze on the EU's ongoing accession talks with Turkey.

The vote is non-binding and has no legal repercussions on the talks, but does send a strong political signal to Ankara and puts pressure on the European Commission, which is leading the negotiations.

The negotiations between the European Union and Turkey began in 2005, but European concerns about Ankara's bid have grown in the wake of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ongoing political and military crackdown following a failed coup in July.
