Emirates Telecommunications Corp. (Etisalat) on Sunday announced the launch of a new service, ALWN, that allows people with WAP-enabled mobiles to access the internet in Arabic, reported the Gulf News.

EWAP is Etisalat's WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) service and it was launched in April in English.

Now the corporation has arranged for an Arabic content service in association with the Egypt-based media company Good News International.

Mohammed Al Fahim, executive vice president for marketing, said that 95,000 people subscribe to the EWAP service. ALWN will meet the needs of those wanting an Arabic language service.

"Allowing subscribers to access EWAP using Arabic opens up the service to many more Etisalat customers and we are sure it will be popular," he said.

Emad El Din Adeeb, chairman of Good News International, said the content available was a mix of news and entertainment including local news, hot news, business, gossip, romantic quotes, humor, sport results, entertainment news, unusual news and horoscopes.

EWAP puts a micro-browser on GSM handsets and a WAP gateway on the GSM network, said the paper, adding that this allows mobile phone users to browse the internet and access interactive local and international contents via their phone – Albawaba.com
