ALBAWABA - Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas announced stepping down from the government to become the European Union's Foreign Policy Cheif later this year.
Earlier on Monday, and during a meeting at the presidential palace, Kallas handed in her formal resignation letter to President Alar Karis. Following her move, the three-party government resignation was automatically triggered.
The current government is made up of Kallas' center-right Reform Party, the Social Democratic Party, and the liberal Estonia 200 party. The government is expected to remain in office till early August at the latest.
Kallas will be replacing Spain's Josep Borrel, who has been serving as the foreign policy chief of the EU since 2019. She has also been known for her fierce support of Ukraine and its raging war with Russia.
On June 29, the Reform Party announced its selection of Climate Minister Kristen Michal as the next prime minister. Kallas's final major responsibility was to represent Estonia at a NATO meeting held in Washington last week.
Michal's nomination for office will have to be approved by President Karis and the parliament, or Riigikogu, where the coalition holds a comfortable majority.
