A total of 62 British-trained horses have been entered for the 2002 Dubai World Cup meeting, to compete in the $6 million championship which is scheduled to take place on March 23, the Belfast Telegraph reported Wednesday.

Organizers of the horse race with the world's biggest purse have laid claim to the title of the world's championship event, announcing 720 nominations for the international extravaganza.

Les Benton, Dubai World Cup Committee chairman, announced that 720 entries were made to participate in “the richest day of racing in the world.”

"Since 1996, the Dubai World Cup has grown in stature to realize the aim of Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum to host the premier event in world racing at Nadi Al Sheba,” Benton said.

He added that the number of the nominees was on the rise from year to year.

"Comparing this year and last, there is a rise of eight percent in total entries while, perhaps, the most pleasing figure is the rise of 17 percent from the United States."

The strong entry for the Emirates-sponsored World Cup includes Godolphin's champion Sakhee, Dubai Champion Stakes winner Nayef and Australian champions Northerly, Ethereal and Sunline, the Irish newspaper said – Albawaba.com
