An Emirati student arrested in the US on charges of supporting terrorism has denied the accusations, saying he has filed a motion against a policeman for allegedly hitting him while in custody, according to press reports cited by AFP.

The Gulf Today newspaper reported Sunday that US authorities had released Seif Salem Al Muhairabi on $100,000 bail.

Muhairabi, quoted by the Al Khaleej newspaper, said he had been arrested on accusations of "financing terrorists networks" because of the $7,000 monthly allowance he received from his family.

The Emirati embassy in Washington submitted a written pledge to hand over the student if he is convicted, the paper said.

Hundreds of Gulf nationals, mostly students, have returned from the United States and complained of widespread abuse, harassment and maltreatment mainly by government agencies since the Sept. 11 suicide attacks on New York and the Pentagon.

An undisclosed number have been taken in for questioning over the terror attacks that killed thousands, and several of them remain in police custody, said AFP.

The UAE declared its firm anti-terror position shortly after the attacks. It froze assets of individuals and institutions suspected of having links with terrorists.

The country also severed diplomatic relations with the Taliban regime in Kabul for refusing to hand over prime terror suspect Osama bin Laden to US authorities – Albawaba.com
