Eight people died and fifteen others were injured Monday when a tractor-trailer and a speeding minibus collided head-on on a road south of Cairo, police said.

The minibus was packed with Egyptian men in their twenties who were heading to the capital for their obligatory military service when the driver lost control of his vehicle and smashed into the truck, the police added.

Police said the driver of the minibus also died in the accident which occurred in the area of Al-Ayyat, some 70 kilometers south of Cairo, near where a train caught fire in February and killed over 350 people.

The driver of the truck was seriously injured, along with some of the 14 other injured people, and taken to hospital, they added, according to AFP
