Around 2,500 Egyptian university students demonstrated in Cairo on Tuesday against the United States' bombing of Afghanistan, police sources said.

The students from Ain Shams University's teacher training faculty in northeast Cairo shouted slogans against US President George W. Bush, watched over by large numbers of riot police, and demanded that the air strikes stop, reported AFP.

The demonstration, which involved various political currents including Islamists, ended without clashes.

There have been numerous Egyptian demonstrations against the US attacks in Afghanistan, which are aimed at the country's Taliban regime and its "guest" Osama bin Laden, the chief suspect in the September 11 terror attacks in the United States, since the strikes began on October 7.

However, the size and nature of the protests have been below what was expected, according to analysts.

They said that the official stand against taking part in the war, and the repeated references by officials to the Middle East conflict as the root cause of world terrorism, had echoed public opinion – Albawaba.com
