Nearly 4,000 Egyptian university students on Wednesday protested an expected US military strike on Afghanistan and burned an Israeli flag to denounce the Jewish state's crackdown on the Palestinian uprising against 34 years of military occupation, reported AFP.
The students at Cairo University condemned the US military buildup aimed at forcing the Taliban militia in Kabul to hand over Osama bin Laden, the top US suspect in the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington.
"Whatever our differences with the Taliban, we say no to the Americans," chanted the students, who represented different political groups, including Islamists.
During the protest, which was confined to the campus, the students also burned the Israeli flag and voiced support for "the struggle of the Palestinian people against the barbaric Israeli occupation."
Scores of anti-riot police watched the event without intervening, said the agency.
Egypt has shown cautious support for a US-led anti-terrorism coalition aimed at toppling the Taliban regime and hunting down suspected terrorists.
President Hosni Mubarak has warned of a divided world if the coalition is declared.
