ALBAWABA - The Egyptian Navy has assumed command of the Combined Maritime Force to navigate the Red Sea waters, the first time that Egypt undertakes such a role.

The SMF is a Bahrain-based 34-nation maritime coalition, which includes the United States. It 's duties are mainly to combat terrorism, stamp out piracy and enforce regional maritime cooperation, according to Anadolu.

This is the first time that the Egyptian navy leads the coalition, and patrols the Red Sea waters, Bab El Mandeb straits and the Gulf of Aden.

The area is crucial for global trade. At least 10 percent of the world's import and export activity goes through the Bab El Mandeb Straits.
