The Egyptian Press Association on Thursday decided to investigate three of its members for allegedly violating association anti-normalization resolutions by attending an Israeli embassy party.
The three are alleged to have attended the party at the Cairo embassy on the anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel.
In its meeting this week, the association’s council responded to a request submitted by dozens of members demanding that the association take stern action in the case by ordering the probe.
Egyptian newspapers have reported the incident without any comment or denial on the part of the journalists.
The council also discussed the issue of eight journalists fired a year ago from the Cairo-based Al Nabaa newspaper, in which all efforts to mediate with management had failed.
The council decided to expel the newspaper’s managing director and editor in chief, Mamdouh Mahran. This could, in turn, halt production of the newspaper in a month’s time, because Egyptian laws bar non-association members from serving in the post of newspaper editor in chief.
Meanwhile, the association’s judiciary committee has not yet set a date for the association head elections, although the “expected” candidates have continued with their campaigning.
Magdi Hussein in particular has begun intensive visits to the opposition newspapers, the last of which was to the Nasserist Party paper Al Arabi – Albawaba.com
