Egyptian Transport Minister Hamdy Abdel Salam el-Shayeb has died of a heart attack, Egypt's Middle East News Agency reported Sunday. He was 56 years old.

El-Shayeb was taken to a hospital Saturday night after a

heart attack, but doctors were unable to save his life,

MENA reported.

He was appointed transport minister in March 2002,

replacing Ibrahim el-Dimeiri, who resigned after a train

fire that killed about 360 people and opened to criticism

the state of Egypt's rail system.

El-Shayeb, who graduated from the Alexandria Engineering

University in 1971, spent some 20 years of his career

working with Petrojet, Egypt's giant petroleum company. He

was appointed president of the company two months before

becoming Minister of Transport.

He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Prime Minister Atef Obeid and several ministers

participated in funeral prayers Sunday in Cairo. He was to

be buried in Alexandria. (Albawaba.com)
