Egypt Sets Plan to Eliminate Literacy in Five Years

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has instructed the ministry of education to set a five-year plan to eliminate literacy among nationals, the daily Al Ahram said. 

“It has been decided to eliminate literacy among 1.3 million Egyptians every year,” Minister of Education Hussein Kamel told the daily, adding that 80,000 graduates would be employed with generous pay to implement the plan. 

The minister said that the country would be divided into four groups of districts.  

The first group consists of five districts including North Sinai, South Sinai, New Valley, Matrouh and Red Sea where the campaign would be launched during the period between 2001-2002. 

The second group consists of 5 districts including Al Ismaeliyyah, Demyat, Port Said, Aswan and Suez in addition to the city of Luxor. The campaign will be launched in these areas during 2002-2003. 

The third group consists of 7 districts including Alexandria, Kalyoubiyyah, Kafr Al Sheikh, Al Munufiyyah, Bani Swaif, Al Gharbiyah and Al Fayyoum where the campaign for eradicating literacy will be launched between 2003-2004. The fourth group consists of 9 districts including Al Dakahliyyah, Asute, Al Giza, Al Menia, Qena, Cairo, Suhag, Al Behairah and Al Sharkiyyah where the campaign will be launched during 2004-2005. 

The campaign for literacy final eradication will be launched during the period between 2005-2006, added the daily. Albawaba.com
