A criminal court in Egypt's Giza sentenced Sunday a low-ranking policeman to life in prison on charges of rape.
The policeman, named as Khaled Abdel-Rahman Mohamed, was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl with a mental disability in a police station in Cairo's low-income neighbourhood of Imbaba last August.
Mohamed received the maximum sentence and may appeal within a period of 60 days from the date of the sentence.
Al-Ahram's Arabic news website said the incident took place when the girl was held at Imbaba Police Station for investigations due to her not carrying a national identification card. She was reporting an incident and was arrested when she failed to produce the card.
The policeman took her out of her cell and raped her, as security cameras inside the station showed, according to Al-Ahram.
