The Egyptian government has hanged five people convicted of murder and theft, AFP reported Sunday.
The interior ministry said the people were executed in the southern province of Assyut after an appeals process. No details of individual cases were provided.
The country has sentenced dozens of people to death since the first democratically elected president, Mohammed Morsi, was ousted in 2013, but only one has been executed, according to AFP.
Authorities have been cracking down on Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, outlawing the group and detaining hundreds of its alleged supporters. Morsi was sentenced to 20 years in prison last week after a trial heavily criticized by human rights organizations.
