Egyptian authorities have conditioned their future support for the Palestinian Authority on the resumption of law and order in the Gaza Strip is restored by Palestinian security forces.
The announcement comes almost a week after two Egyptian border guards were killed and at least 30 others wounded at the Rafah crossing between the Strip and Egypt when Fatah gunmen opened fire.
The gunmen also demolished portions of the concrete fence along the border using explosives and a bulldozer, enabling Palestinians to cross into Egypt.
The Egyptian message was reportedly delivered to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as part of a specially delivered message, according to Al Quds Al Arabi. The message reportedly added that Egypt would withdraw its support for the peace process if order was not restored.
The gunmen were protesting the arrest of one of their colleagues by the PA security forces on charges of kidnapping three British nationals.
