Egypt has been hit by a crime wave following the ousting of ex-dictator, Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt's central bank chief has been the victim of a carjacking after three masked gunmen attacked his vehicle, killing his bodyguard, MENA reported on Wednesday.

According to the state news agency, Hisham Ramez's bodyguard and driver were on the way to pick him up when the attack occured. The gunmen then made off with the car.

The carjacking, although apparently not specifically targeted at the bank chief, marks a continued wave of crime in Egypt, which has worsened since the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011

On Tuesday dozens of masked men attacked a hotel in the capital, close to Tahrir Square. Staff formed a human chain around the entrance to try to defend the building.
