The Emirati city of Dubai said it will demolish 29 old buildings in the next three months which pose a public safety risk, reported the Gulf News.
Fouzi Al Shuhhi, head of the Buildings Control Section at the Building and Housing Department, said, "Some of these buildings are structurally not safe, and have to be demolished to make way for new construction. Some premises to be cleared are without buildings, but just have a compound wall."
Owners were warned to destroy the buildings on their own. Then advertisements were placed in local newspapers.
Al Shuhhi said, "The advertisements warned that failing to comply with the instructions will mean that the municipality will demolish these buildings. The cost has to be borne by the owners, along with a 20 per cent administrative cost."
The Safety and Demolition Unit carried out 138 demolition operations in the first half of this year, including 44 buildings to pave the way for development projects, and the removal of 81 wooden caravans and eight dilapidated buildings – Albawaba.com
