Arabic bands played traditional Emarati traditional music to herald the opening of one of the most awaited art events of this DSS – the 2009 Photography Exhibition. Keeping in line with the theme of the exhibition, ‘Emarati Cultural Heritage’, the music provided an ambience befitting the event.

The 2009 Photography Exhibition, a signature event of Dubai Summer Surprises, was officially opened on Thursday, August 6, in Deira City Centre by Ibrahim Saleh, Coordinator General of the Dubai Shopping Festival Office, an agency of the Dubai Department of Economic Development, and Fuad Najjar, Vice President of Deira City Centre.

Amateur, professional, and press photographers are displaying exclusive images under the theme ‘Emarati Cultural Heritage’ focusing on the various elements that make up the distinct identity of UAE. The exhibition will go on till August 13th from 10am to 10pm on weekdays and from 10am to midnight on weekends.

Apart from a display of around 180 images, the exhibition this year also sees the prominent participation of the Juma Al Majid Centre for Culture and Heritage that is showcasing the history of Dubai through an extensive collection of photographs. Besides the exhibition, entries will also be adjudged by an eminent jury for awards in each category.

Ibrahim Saleh said, “The Photography Exhibition has been an extremely successful DSS signature event over the years and has constantly attracted visitors for its visual appeal and its ability to convey relevant messages and themes. The theme for this year, ‘Emarati Cultural Heritage’, was chosen to define the photographer’s perspective of culture and its elements in the UAE. The participation of Juma Al Majid Center for Culture and Heritage is also prominent for the fact the display from the center’s archives throw light on the heritage of Dubai and the rapid growth of the city in the last decade.”

Fuad Najjar said, “Apart from being a mall that prides itself in its retail excellence, Deira City Centre is constantly striving to enhance the shopping experience for mall visitors. The DSS 2009 Photography Exhibition is one among a series of events that Deira City Centre has hosted this year as part of its commitment in creating a unique environment for shopping.”

On the concluding day on August 13th, winners will be announced in a gathering of all participants.
