It was reported that drug trafficking in Jordan moved towards more potent narcotics due to its central geographical location in the region and its long borders, rendering the country a fertile transit point for drug trafficking to the whole area.

According to Jordan Times, a government official warned that Jordan was increasingly vulnerable to drug abuse problems.

Jordan’s director of the anti-narcotics department Tayel Majali was quoted by the local newspapers as saying that " the number of cases involving drug trafficking and consumption are increasing, the kind of drugs consumed in Jordan is also altering,” noting that more than 95 percent of the drugs were destined for neighboring countries.

While the number of cases involving drug trafficking and consumption are increasing, the kind of drugs consumed in Jordan is also changing, according to Majali.

He said there has been a rise in the use of heroin since 1995, such that in the last two years it has become the leading narcotic consumed in Jordan, the daily said.

He added that in the first four months of the year, agents seized 13.5 kilograms of heroin, 50 kilograms of hashish, 37 kilograms of marijuana, 118 kilograms of cannabis plants and around 500,000 stimulants (mainly Fenetylline-Captagon) with a combined "street value" of JD3.5 million – Albawaba.com
