DP World recently signed an AED 1.85 billion contract with Jan de Nul Dredging Limited, major European company, to carry out dredging and reclamation works for Stage I of the Jebel Ali New Container Terminal.
The contract was signed between Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman, DP World and Jafza, and Jan Kop, Project Director, Jan de Nul, in the presence of Jamal Majid bin Thaniah, Deputy Chairman of DP World and Jafza, Engineer Nazek H. Al Sabbagh, Head of Civil Engineering Department, and Mohammed Al Mualim, DP World’s UAE Regional Manager. DP World is implementing an expansion of the Jebel Ali Port by building new facilities to supplement the cargo handling capacity of the ports at Jebel Ali and Dubai, in order to cope with the projected trade growth and to absorb new cargo flows.
“We are pleased to sign this contract with Jan de Nul, who are the global leaders in dredging and reclamation works,” said Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem. “Dubai Ports believes in planning and implementing strategies by anticipating future demands and requirements. The expansion of the Jebel Ali Port is in keeping with this approach, and the signing of the contract with Jan de Nul to carry out dredging and reclamation works at the New Container Terminal marks significant forward movement in our efforts towards an expanded Jebel Ali Port.”
“Recent studies indicate that most of the over 2,200 tenant companies in Jafza will experience strong growth in their regional distribution activities in the next 10 years, even as Jafza continues to attract new tenants. In addition, expanding UAE industries are projected to stimulate further growth in consumable goods imports that cater to hotels, restaurants and shops. All these factors have combined to heighten the need to implement expansion of the Jebel Ali Port to effectively meet future demand,” bin Sulayem added.
The construction of Stage I of Jebel Ali New Container Terminal is divided into five phases. The contract for the first phase - MCC2 - has already been awarded, with the construction of the quay wall having commenced. The contract agreement signed with Jan de Nul forms the second phase, MCC3, which consists of such activities as dredging works, construction of rubble mound breakwaters and revetments in a length of 9 km and involving a total rock quantity of 2.5 million m3, construction of floating pontoons at the Eastern side of the new quay wall to provide a safe berthing of vessels, and providing navigation aids required for Stage I of the New Container Terminal.
Jan de Nul is a world leader in dredging, reclamation works and specialized services for offshore pipelines, rock dumping, salvage and heavy lifting. The company, which employs over 2,800 people, has the world’s largest dredging vessels, and its diverse, well-balanced fleet of dredgers provides the flexibility to execute dredging and reclamation-related works of any kind, size or nature.
