ALBAWABA - A stampede at an Indian Hindu festival killed at least 15 people with many others reported injured, AFP reported citing a doctor at the Kumbh Mela festival on Wednesday.
"At least 15 people have died for now. Others are being treated," the doctor at the festival site in Prayagraj said.
On the other hand, Prayagraj Hindu festival's death toll varied as local officials reportedly revealed that 38 were killed in the crashes at the world's largest religious gathering in India. The Indian government, however, has not made any official statement yet.
The Guardian reported that Hindu religious leaders urged pilgrims not to reach the Sangam today and to take "baths instead at other points along the river."
Earlier, the Indian government said it expects about 100 million to take a holy dip on Wednesday, as it is highlighted as the most auspicious day due to a rare alignment of celestial bodies after 144 years.
