Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who has been hospitalized for the second time in two weeks, is improving, the hospital where he is being treated said on Saturday.

A check-up done on Bulent Ecevit, 77, has shown that he was "responding positively to the treatment and had begun the process of healing," the Baskent Hospital said.

"His treatment will continue as planned," the brief statement said, according to AFP

He was hospitalized for a fractured left rib and an inflamed vein in his left leg, which was diagnosed as the beginning of phlebitis, and will stay under observation for at least a week.

His admission to hospital came after the Prime Minister spent 12 days at home following his hospitalization on May 4 for what his doctors said was an intestinal infection.

Meanwhile, the mainstream Turkish media on Saturday said Ecevit's wife, Rahsan, was to blame because she insisted on taking care of him herself and kept him at home for more than a week without any examination by doctors.

Ecevit agreed to go to the hospital on Friday only after his doctors came to his house, asking to examine him and threatening to say they were "no longer responsible" if they were not allowed to, the Radikal reported.

However, the Prime Minister denied the allegations against his wife as "ugly and irrational" in a statement issued on Saturday.

"It is true that I did not consult my doctors since my first examination until the recent days," the statement issued from his hospital bed said.

"But the reason for this was my belief that if I went to hospital again, it could lead to scenarios that would harm the economy. That is indeed the case," Ecevit added. (Albawaba.com)
