DMA TAKES THE LEAD AT GREEN BUILDING SUMMIT

Abu Dhabi, May 24, 2010:  The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) today outlined plans to introduce new building codes to the emirate in a keynote address at the Green Building Summit in Abu Dhabi.

This summit brings together leading sustainability professionals and stakeholders to discuss, debate, and share best practice on design, construction and the built environment.

Commenting on the DMA’s participation, H.E. Rashid Al Hajeri, Chairman of Department of Municipal Affairs says “Following our leadership vision that environmentally sustainable living is maintained for future generations, the DMA is laying the foundation for a responsible future.  By offering the community an efficient sustainable environment we are supporting the emirate’s dynamic growth.”

In his keynote speech, H.E. Dr. Abdullah Ghareeb Al Baloushi, Executive Director-Municipal Affairs Support, set out the objectives for the planned regulation: “The new building codes will deliver climate sensitive, durable, high performance ‘green’ buildings across the emirate.  Sustainable development with minimal environmental impact is now taking shape in tangible regulatory form.”

“These codes are based on global best practice and will also improve the construction standards of buildings.  That means more cost-effective structures with improved health and safety standards,” said H.E. Dr. Al Baloushi.

He concluded: “The government of Abu Dhabi has succeeded in many of its projects and initiatives. Given the environmental pressures we face, and the 2030 ambition to become a best practice model, we are introducing new building codes with the force of law behind them.”

DMA is implementing regulations and processes across all its operations to achieve a sustainable environment.  The new international building codes for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi will provide a framework for a sustainable and better quality of life across the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The DMA’s Chairman, H.E. Al Hajeri concluded: “The DMA is working towards the emirate's vision of achieving a sustainable living environment by setting global trends and world leading standards in building and development projects.  We, at the DMA, are proud of the efforts of the Abu Dhabi government in pursuing sustainable growth.”
