In a major initiative towards promoting exports from the emirate, the Dubai Export Development Corporation (DEDC), has partnered with the Dubai Economic Department and the Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consulting to launch a dedicated trade event - Dubai Industrial Investment and Partnership Forum (DIIPF).

The event, combining a conference and exhibition, will be held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC) from February 4 – 6, 2008. It is aimed at strengthening Dubai’s manufacturing capabilities and capacities and significantly increasing the export sector’s share of the emirate’s GDP over the next five years.

“This major event will also help attract and increase local and foreign investments for industrial projects,” said Khalid Al Kassim, Deputy Director General of Planning and Development, Department of Economic Development and DEDC Chairman.

“Developing the country’s manufacturing sector will help Dubai and the UAE gradually reduce import dependence and promote a self-sustaining economy.”

Eng. Saed Al Awadi, Chief Executive Officer of the DEDC said DIIPF will encourage small and medium enterprises expand their businesses and find partners to help update their knowledge and skill sets.

“The event will give major companies and contractors the opportunity to find suitable partners and sub-contractors to work with. It will also help export sector professionals benefit from various incentives and facilities provided by local and regional governments and take advantage of the growing importance placed on high quality non-oil exports from the region,” said Al Awadi.

The conference will feature a powerful speaker line-up including a keynote address from Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and Co-Director of the new Web Science Research Initiative. The keynote will explore the finer nuances of e-trade and how best to use technology to increase trade links as well as delving into the issues of sub-contracting and partnership exchanges.

“E-trade plays an important role in facilitating business across borders. It is vital for manufacturers to understand the best ways to exploit technology and use it to expand their scope of operations,” added Al Awadi.

“There can be no better person to explain the World Wide Web and the future of the Internet than its creator. We are confident the export community in Dubai, the UAE and the region will benefit from his deep insight and valuable input on the topic.”

The DEDC is working closely with the Department of Economic Development and Gulf Organisation of Industrial Consulting to attract visitors from all GCC countries to the event.

DIIPF will feature multiple workshop sessions, including presentations on ‘10 Manufacturing Investment Opportunities’, international best practices and industrial certification and investing in Dubai.
