ALBAWABA - A historic fire erupted at an apartment complex in Hong Kong, leaving at least 55 people killed, the fire department confirmed on Thursday.

Fire service officials announced to the media that 51 people died inside the building complex, while four others succumbed to their wounds in the hospital.

Hong Kong authorities stated that a fire broke out inside four of the eight apartment blocks in the estate. According to the local media, the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po, in the northern New Territories, contains 2,000 flats.

Firefighters, after hours of hard work, were able to stop the fire and put it under control. Officials further mentioned that one building was not affected.

In addition, the apartment complex, which is made up of eight 31-storey towers, houses about 4,800 people.

The cause of the fire is still unknown until this moment; however, authorities believe that the bamboo scaffolding and green construction mesh may have helped spread the flames.
