Daesh militants have reportedly withdrew from Ramadi’s main government building Saturday, a day after raising their black flag on the roof of the site, according to Reuters.
Mayor of the Iraqi city said Daesh was no longer occupying the government headquarters following airstrikes by the US-led coalition, which forced the militant group to push back.
Jihadists launched an attack on Anbar province’s capital overnight Thursday by using six suicide car bombs, Reuters reports.
Iraqi forces had been outnumbered by Daesh militants, although reinforcements have been sent in, sources said.
Ramadi is capital to one of Iraq’s biggest provinces. Seizing the city would be the biggest victory for Daesh since the group took control of Nineveh province’s Mosul in June 2014.
