At least five civilians including two children were killed by a series of Daesh rocket attacks across residential areas in the Syrian city of Palmyra Monday, AFP reports.

Intense clashes between militants and government troops raged on in the outskirts of the ancient city’s UNESCO World Heritage site, London-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory For Human Rights said.

“It’s the first time that IS (Islamic State), has fired so many rockets on the city,” the activist group’s chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

Daesh militants seized the northern part of Palmyra Saturday after surrounding the 2,000-year-old city on May 13.
