According to a security official, Daesh has killed five policemen near Iraq's largest oil refinery on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

Daesh's offensive in the village of Tal Albu Jarad was likely an effort to relieve its fighters besieged inside Baiji refinery.

As a strategic economic asset, the Baiji refinery is constantly changing hands between Iraqi forces and Daesh.

On June 8, Iraqi forces regained control over Baiji. However, since then, Daesh militants recaptured three neighborhoods in the town of Baiji near the refinery.

According to Reuters, Daesh already controls a third of major oil producer Iraq and large parts of neighboring Syria.
