Daesh has claimed responsibility for an attack on Tuesday in which assailants shot and killed a Saudi security officer in Riyadh, Al-Arabiya reported.

The state-owned news agency SPA quoted an interior ministry spokesperson as saying the officer, Col. Kitab Majed al-Hammadi, was shot dead in the al-Dawadimi province west of Riyadh.

An interior ministry statement said authorities were investigating the killing.

Daesh claimed responsibility via its Amaq news website, saying the group's Saudi-based affiliate, the Nejd Province, carried out the attack.

The same group on Sunday claimed responsibility for an explosion targeting a police station near Riyadh that killed one person and damaged two police vehicles.
