Daesh launched an attack in the central Syrian province of Homs late Tuesday night, Reuters reports.
A Syrian military source stated that although Assad's forces repelled the attack, clashes are still ongoing in parts of the regime-controlled area.
No death toll has been confirmed, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that their were large numbers of people dead.
Earlier Tuesday, two bomb blasts killed four people and injured 17 others in Homs.
Over 220,000 people have been killed in Syria since the start of the conflict in March 2011.
