A Greek-Cypriot young diver who brutally assaulted a British woman after she refused to have sex with him was sent to prison on Monday for three years by a Larnaca court.
Unemployed diver Zenon Mastrou, aged 25, was originally accused of rape and abduction over the September 17 attack near the popular south coast resort of Ayia Napa. Prosecutors dropped the abduction charge and a charge of rape was not entered due to lack of evidence, according to AFP.
"The behavior of the accused, which can be only described as an extreme affront to the victim's human dignity, warrants a deterrent sentence, which can only be incarceration," said court president Costas Pampallis in passing sentence. (Albawaba.com)
