The US State Department has announced that it sent the text of the conclusion of nuclear talks struck between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries to Congress.

The announcement means that American lawmakers will be spending the next 60 days reviewing the agreement.

"Day One of the 60-day review period begins tomorrow, Monday, July 20," State Department spokesman John Kirby said on Sunday.

He added that the bureau had "transmitted to Congress the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, its annexes and related materials."

Hours before the announcement, US Secretary of State John Kerry defended the conclusion of the talks with Iran and advised Congress to approve the agreement.

“If Congress doesn't pass this, if Congress were to kill this, then we have no inspections, we have no sanctions, we have no ability to negotiate," he said in a Sunday interview with CNN.

Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidates have been loud in opposing any agreement and have threatened to revoke any deal if they take office.

Kerry, however, says the critics of the conclusion who claim they know of a better solution have failed to come up with alternatives because the better conclusion they speak of is nothing but “fantasy.”

The conclusion was reached on Tuesday and marked the end of years of nuclear negotiations on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
