AP reports that the Homs commander for the Syrian rebel group Ahrar al-Sham was shot and killed late Tuesday.
According to AP, Labib al-Nahhas of Ahrar al-Sham posted on twitter confirming the death of Abu Rateb al-Homsy, the group's main commander for the Homs province.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights futher confirms the story, stating that Rateb was killed in Farhaniyeh village, while in a car with his wife. His wife was wounded in the attack.
The assailants are unknown and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Ahrar al-Sham is one of the largest and most powerful opposition groups in Syria. Their origins include ties to al-Qaeda, but the organization is now independent. They are considered to be open to negotiation for peace talks.
