US computer company Compaq may soon open an office in Lebanon, a senior executive was quoted as saying by the Daily Star newspaper.
The company has offices in Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
“Lebanon is the next logical step,” said Walid Moneimne, vice-president and general manager of Compaq’s Enterprise Business Group in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Moneimne did not specify a date for opening a Lebanon office, said the paper, but he said that Compaq likes to establish “as fully fledged an office as possible, not put one person here, so the move will not be immediate."
Speaking on the sidelines of the third Arab International Telecom and Information Technology conference held in Beirut, Moneimne said that although Lebanon had been through two years of economic stagnation, “we are hoping this will be a real growth year. This is a small market, but I think it has the potential to grow faster than the region.”
He said new technologies were helping markets grow faster, because the cost of making a business out of an idea in the new economy requires less investment than with traditional businesses.
