Press reports said clashes erupted late Tuesday in the central city of Homs between the Syrian army and soldiers who defected. Meanwhile, human rights activists said that Syrian security forces carried out at dawn today arrest raids in the Damascus suburb of Harasta, where demonstrations calling to the downfall of the regime continued.

Anti-regime demonstrations were held Tuesday night also in Darya, Harasta, Kanaker, Zabadani and Madaya.

Meanwhile, Western countries published a UN draft resolution calling for further sanctions against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and senior members of his family and aides. The representatives of the United States and Europe hope to bring the draft resolution to a vote in the Security Council as soon as possible. According to the resolution, drafted by Britain, France, Germany, Portugal and the United States, the Council will call for a freeze of funds owned by al-Assad and 22 other senior figures.

The resolution also imposes a ban on arms sales to Syria.
