Central African Republic's presidency said Monday that loyalist troops had defeated an attempted coup against President Ange Felix Patasse and were seeking those responsible.

"There was a coup attempt which failed, which began at 2 a.m. and lasted until this morning. Now the situation is calm, the attackers have been put to flight and are being sought by the presidential guard," presidential spokesman Prosper Ndouba told Reuters.

"The president is safe and well and with his family," he said.
