Castrol has announced its status as Official UEFA EURO 2012™ Sponsor and today unveiled predictions for the 16 countries most likely to qualify from their groups for the final stages of the tournament.

Castrol has measured the past team and player performance to work out the attack and defence ratings of each of 51* competing European nations. Then, by simulating the tournament more than 50,000 times and taking into account the draw groupings, the results interestingly show that England, despite failing to qualify for the UEFA EURO 2008™ tournament, are jointly ranked third favourite to qualify alongside last year’s tournament winner Spain. Austria, the previous tournament’s joint host, is however considered ‘unlikely’ to qualify with only 3% chance of success.

Castrol has calculated each team’s chances of progression through the UEFA EURO 2012™ group stages to secure a place at the all important Final stages alongside hosts, Poland and Ukraine.  Netherlands, Germany, England and Spain top the list of the competing nations as the most likely to make it past the qualifiers, with fans from Wales, Northern Ireland and Belgium, amongst others, unlikely to be travelling far as their nations languish at the bottom of the pack with less than a 4% chance of securing a place in the Finals.

Commenting on the predictions he added “With Castrol’s help, fans can get a more accurate forecast of how the competition will pan out and how big teams like Spain and Italy will get on”.
