At least 13 people have now died from the collapse of multiple buildings in Morocco's commercial hub city Casablanca, according to Agence France Presse Sunday.
Three apartment blocks in the El Hank district of the city collapsed Friday, immediately leaving dozens injured and at least five dead.
"Five bodies were recovered from the rubble, [including two children and Moroccan actress Amal Maarouf and her mother]," according to officials quoted by the MAP news agency.
By Sunday, officials reported that the death toll now stood at 13 from the accident, adding that the toll may continue to rise with many "people [still] under the rubble."
The toll from Friday's tragedy could still increase "because there are people under the rubble."
It is still not known why the buildings collapsed, but residents from the area told AFP that the "general lack of maintenance" as well as "haphazard works [on the lower floors of the buildings]" were the likely causes behind the collapse.
Residents in surrounding buildings have since been evacuated from their homes until the reasoning behind the collapse is conclusive.
This is not the first time that buildings have collapsed in the city. In 2012, two people died from a building collapse that was caused by bad weather.
The housing minister reported that four to seven thousand homes are at risk of collapsing in the city.
Casablanca is home to around five million people, many of whom live in hazardous housing conditions.
