ALBAWABA- A 50-year-old Dutch man was arrested after a suspected intentional car explosion at Amsterdam’s Dam Square on Thursday afternoon.
The explosion, believed to have been caused by a primitive homemade device, left the driver engulfed in flames, but no other injuries were reported.
Videos from the scene show the small red car pulling up near the National Monument in the crowded square before a blast erupted inside the vehicle's cabin.
The driver, on fire, emerged from the car and collapsed on the cobblestone ground. Police officers were seen ordering him to stay down while one retrieved a fire extinguisher to douse the flames.
Authorities said a police officer had been trailing the car and quickly began evacuating the area after the explosion. Several police vehicles arrived within minutes.
Local witnesses, including street performer Shadi the Pigeon Man, described hearing a loud “boom” and seeing people flee in panic.
The suspect was taken into custody at the hospital while being treated for his injuries. Police have not disclosed his place of residence or a possible motive, but suspect he deliberately caused the explosion.
