A car bomb exploded Tuesday in Cape Town's busy Adderley Street in the city center, injuring at least six people and causing chaos during peak hour traffic, police and witnesses said.
According to public SABC radio, the car, a white Volkswagen Golf, was parked near an office block when it exploded. No damage was done to the building, but the car was destroyed.
"There was a loud bang, and I thought it was thunder," an unnamed witness told the SABC. "Then there was fire and smoke. The car was totally blown to pieces. The seats (of the car) are lying all over the road."
Police immediately cordoned off the area and sent in bomb experts with sniffer dogs in case others bombs had been placed in nearby parked cars.
A police helicopter buzzed overhead as police kept onlookers at bay.
The explosion is the seventh in Cape Town this year, and the latest in a series of more than 100 blasts which have rocked South Africa's most popular tourist city in the past three years.
Three people have been killed and 105 injured in the blasts, according to police.
No one has claimed responsibility, nor have police ever succeeded in prosecuting anyone for the blasts - CAPE TOWN (AFP)
