ALBAWABA- Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again suggested that Canada could become the 51st state, stating it could happen “perhaps soon.”
His remarks, which he has reiterated multiple times, reflect his apparent interest in annexing America’s northern neighbor, which is larger than the U.S. in land area.
Trump has previously proposed erasing the 5,525-mile-long border between the two countries, arguing it would eliminate the need for tariffs on one of America's top trading partners.
"If people wanted to play the game right, it would be 100% certain that they’d become a state," he said recently.
Initially dismissed as a joke, Trump's statements have now prompted more serious discussions, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reportedly acknowledging behind closed doors that the idea is "a real thing."
However, any annexation would require congressional approval and likely a referendum in Canada, where public opinion on the matter remains skeptical.
While Trump has not suggested military action, his persistent remarks have raised questions about U.S.-Canada relations. If Canada were to join the U.S., its population of 41.6 million would make it the most populous state, surpassing California.
It would also become a political powerhouse in presidential elections, with 57 Electoral College votes.
