ALBAWABA - A Canadian Government official spoke to AFP, saying that Canada will be halting all arms shipments to Israel.
Canada has been providing Israel with billions of dollars a year in military aid, had already reduced its weapons shipments to Israel to non-lethal equipment such as radios following October 7.
"The situation on the ground makes it so that we can't export any kind of military equipment," said the Canadian official, who requested anonymity. Melanie Joly, Canada's foreign minister, told the Toronto Star newspaper on Tuesday that Ottawa would suspend future military deliveries to Israel.
Israel slammed the decision, with its Foreign Minister Israel Katz saying it "undermines Israel's right to self-defense against Hamas terrorists".
US Senator Bernie Sanders welcomed the move, saying in a post on X: "Given the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, including widespread and growing starvation, the U.S. should not provide another nickel for Netanyahu's war machine".
According to Radio Canada, Israel has historically been a significant recipient of Canadian arms exports, with CAN$21 million in military equipment sent to Israel in 2022, up from CAN$26 million in 2021.
On Monday, the Canadian Parliament approved a nonbinding resolution urging the international community to work toward a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. The problem of weaponry sales to Israel has prompted legal action in several nations throughout the world.
In early March, a group of lawyers and Palestinian people living in Canada filed a case against the government, accusing it of breaking both international and domestic law by suspending arms supplies to Israel.
Al-Aqsa Flood operation against Israel
Hamas military group announced on Oct. 7 a military operation called "Al-Aqsa Flood" against Israel which is the biggest offensive in decades.
Palestinian fighters “infiltrated” Israel from the Gaza Strip and captured military bases and took hostages as photos and videos went viral online showing Hamas fighters on vehicles inside Israel and others paragliding into occupation territory.
In response, Israeli armed forces announced targeting Hamas positions inside the Gaza Strip. Thousands were killed, and dozens of thousands of others were injured in the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
The latest statistics by the Ministry of Health in Gaza revealed that the death toll from Israeli brutal pounding on the Gaza Strip since October 7 has soared to 31,819+ people, with more than 73,934+ injuries.
Since then, approximately 85% of Gazans have been displaced, all of whom are suffering from severe food insecurity, and the healthcare system has collapsed. Hundreds of thousands of people lack shelter, and aid trucks are entering the area at a lower rate than before the conflict began.
